Endurance Sport

While some sports such as power lifting, sprinting, gymnastics and the long jump are power sports, others are endurance sports. Endurance sports include any event that challenges the body’s mental and physical powers of stress or hardship. Endurance sports, the supreme challenge to an individual’s durability, test a participant’s ability to the maximum. The sports, such as marathon running, triathlon, endurance horse racing or 24-hour car racing and 24-hour cycling races, as well as eco-challenge races and cross-country skiing, test two types of endurance: cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance.

Cardiorespiratory endurance is the ability of your lungs and heart to provide your muscles with two vital components – oxygen and nutrients. If you wish to run in any form of endurance sport, you have to have a fit and highly functioning cardiorespiratory system. Aerobic exercises associated with your cardio system include biking, jogging and swimming. These actually enhance cardio respiratory endurance.

People more commonly the need for muscular endurance when they talk about or train for any type of endurance sport. In essence, muscular endurance is the capability of your muscles to carry out contractions over an extended interval. This is actual physical endurance. A body is tested to the limits of its ability over a distance. Endurance sport is about extended distances. Sprinting demands certain skills and takes its toll of a body; a marathon, however, takes the demands made upon a sprinter then enhances and intensifies them. If you wish to take part in an endurance sport, you have to rely extensively on the power of your muscles to take you from the beginning of the race to its end.

More Info

Endurance sport tests the body in other ways. Some of the courses of endurance races run over difficult terrain. There are hills to run or ride up and over. The Boston Marathon, for example has several hills to test the runners. Other endurance sports alternate or mix up different components. Triathlons are a case of mixed sports combined into one event. Since 200, triathlons are a part of the Olympic Games. In the ironman triathlon, for instance, a participant has to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles.

In car racing, the endurance race requires the driver and/or drivers to race for at least 24 hours or a specific amount of miles. There are the 24-hours of Le Mans, the 24-hours of Daytona and Spa 24. The race considered the most demanding is the 24-hours of Nürburgring.
