Favourite Marathon Runs

There are many different favourite marathon runs. Marathons are popular forms of endurance sports throughout the world. There are approximately 800 held annually throughout the world. Countries include France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Russia and, of course, the United States. Several of these events fall under the jurisdiction of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Racers or AIMS. This organization, founded in 1982, now regulates at least 238 events. These are held in 82 different countries and territories around the globe. Favourite times for marathons include early spring and early fall when the weather is conducive to running without heat exhaustion.

What constitutes or what are the favourite marathon runs, depend upon with or to whom you talk. There are, however, certain marathons regularly drawing large crowds of both participants and viewers. They are the media darlings and receive ample coverage in the newspapers and on the television. Many of them have been running for years. These favourite marathons include the American Marathons: the well-known Boston Marathon, the renowned New York Marathon and often spoken off Chicago Marathon. The favourites, worldwide, consist of marathons held in London and Berlin.

The largest marathon races in the world comprise the biannual World Marathon Series. The prize warded for being the outstanding male or female competitor in the race series is $500,000. Members of the World Marathon Series are Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London and New York. For some individuals, the excitement and popularity as well as the prestige of these races makes them fan favourites.

Some people prefer the smaller or less known marathons. Marathons take place in the United States in Athens, Greece; Austin, Arizona, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Fairbanks, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Worth, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville, Orlando, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Tulsa, Virginia and Washington. Large and small marathons occur in other parts of the world including Budapest, Hungary; Cape Town, South Africa; Copenhagen, Denmark; Daegu, South Korea; Dortmund-Essen, Germany; Dublin, Ireland; Great Wall of China, China; Hong Kong, China; Krakow, Poland; Ottawa, Canada; Paris, France; Toronto, Canada; and Tromso, Norway.

Marathons cross wastelands, wind through urban landscapes and race through mountain passes. Participants run in straight lines or along curvy streets. The scenery can be historic or modern; rural or urban, pastoral or industrial. People base their choice of favourite marathon runs on the scenery, time of day, country, financial reward, amenities offered along the way or at the finish and coverage.
