Swimming Workouts
What type of swimming workouts you do depends upon a number of factors. Swim workouts reflect your purpose. Why are you working out? Is it to improve your health? Are you trying to advance your swimming skills? Is it your intent to race in competition? Is it therapeutic, intended to help you recover from an illness or injury? Is it part of a cross-training program?
A swimming workout also indicates your level of skill. Are you a beginner, a novice or a master? Are you good enough to take part in an advanced swimming workout? Are you beyond advance, perhaps a professional?
Another element to consider is your focus. Do you intend to create or take part in a swimming workout aimed at your individual swimming skills? Are you planning to take part in your own swim team workouts? Within this context, you can ask yourself the question of time. How long can I work at working out? Is your regime restricted to once, twice or three times a week? Are you able to take part in daily swimming workouts?

These are basic questions. In some programs, a beginner’s workout consists of the very basics. It is, through necessity, the simplest. All beginner swimming workouts are basic swim workouts, repetitive in nature. In some instances, the swimming strokes are the crawl. A pattern for example, would go as follows: warm-up, main swimming set including crawl and one long or several short subsets, and cool down. All elements in the beginners swimming workout are elementary.
As you advance in skills and knowledge, swimming workouts abandon the easier swimming workouts for more challenging ones. Although the pattern of warm-up, main set and cool down remains, the components of the sets increase in difficulty. In the Intermediate Level, you utilize the backstroke, butterfly, freestyle crawl and a medley. Later, you put all the elements together.
