Swimming is an activity that is widely loved all around the world. From competing in swimming events to utilizing it as an exercise regime or just enjoying it for its relaxing qualities, swimming is a large part of life. And, when you swim you have the opportunity to swim in many different places as well as swimming type situations. For example, you can swim at the beach in the ocean. You can swim at the lake in the cool crisp refreshing waters. You can take a nice relaxing dive into a tropical waterfall oasis on your honeymoon. You can even swim in an indoor or outdoor pool. You have many options when you decide to go swimming. But you can also choose from great swimming holes as well.

First of all, you are probably wondering, what is a swimming hole? A swimming hole is any natural body of water, i.e. a stream, spring, river or creek that is both deep and large enough for a person to be able to capably swim in. A swimming hole is considered fresh water and not a lake or ocean. For many older people the idea of swimming in a swimming hole brings up nostalgic fond memories of simpler times within country settings when there was less hustle and bustle in life and people took the time to enjoy their natural surroundings more.

You might be wondering where the best swimming holes can be found. This is entirely a subjective matter. Ones best swimming hole can be another’s not so great one. Things like privacy and secrecy can account for why some people consider certain swimming holes better than others. For example, a secret swimming hole can feel like a special swimming location that no one else uses and knows about. It can almost feel like such a great find belongs to that one person even though it is within a natural setting and that feeling alone can make it the most special swimming experience in someone’s life.

When you decide to use a swimming hole, it is important to keep safety in mind. Because the area is probably more secluded it is less likely that there will be life guards around. And, because you may not be able to see the bottom of the floor too well, diving is not advisable. There are rocks and other various things that can be at the bottom of swimming holes that can be very dangerous. Even if you have swum in a swimming hole time after time, the current can change the sediment of the floor and move things around.
